In this class, we will examine the concept of genre as it is applied
to television and film both formally [what are the places, plots and
people common to a genre?] and culturally [what ideologies are being
supported in this genre?]. In addition to the formal and cultural
aspects, historical elements will be considered. We will also
consider how the issues of race, gender, and class intersect with
some of genres such as televisions cartoons and situation comedies,
fantasy films, and romantic comedies.
