Gender and Sexuality in Japanese Film
This lecture/discussion course examines works of Japanese cinema that
focus on the topic of gender and sexuality. By exploring
representations of gender and sexuality (masculinity, femininity,
gender performance, celebrity, gender roles, normative/deviant
sexuality) we illuminate an important aspect of representative works
and genres, and highlight their social and cultural contexts. In
addition to viewing films, we will read some secondary materials, such
as film criticism, Japanese history and literature, cultural/gender
theory.

Film screenings on Wed evenings are a mandatory part of the course;
students who are not able to attend this timeslot in addition to the
T/Th scheduled class times will not be able to take this course.

Students will be evaluated on class attendance, discussion
participation, homework, essays, and exams.

Graduate students taking this course as EALC-E505 or CULS-C701 will be
assigned an additional research paper and oral presentation.
