Fulfills Form or Theory

This course is designed to provide the student with a working
knowledge of the intellectual history, major concepts, theoretical
approaches, analytical techniques, and field methodologies inherent
to the discipline of ethnomusicology. In particular, this course
will be broken into three interrelated sections. First, we will
examine the various ways in which the field has been defined over
time. Second, we will survey the myriad activities
ethnomusicologists have undertaken throughout their careers. And
third, we will explore basic theoretical premises and analytical
paradigms routinely employed in ethnomusicological scholarship.
