The course will examine various concepts and theories pertaining to
the area of literature. Each session will address a major moment in
the history of literary thought. Readings from Plato, Aristotle,
Horace, Longinus, Huet, Boileau, Du Bos, Rousseau, Diderot, Kant,
Hegel, Freud, Jakobson, Sartre, Beauvoir, Barthes, Genette, Foucault,
Derrida, Kosofsky Sedgwick, Said, Bhabha,  Spivak, Rancière, Casanova,
and Attridge will cover a wide range of questions including: How is
literature defined though the ages? What is the literary canon? What
roles do authors, readers and critics play in the making of
literature? What is the moral and political responsibility of the
writer? What are the geopolitical borders of literature?
