French and Italian | Masterpieces of Italian Literature 2

The focus of this course is on the literature of the 18th, 19th and
20th centuries. Its goal is to read some of modern Italy’s most
representative works, to understand them in their diverse historical
contexts, and to develop a critical approach to literary texts.
Special attention will be paid to such topics as the Enlightenment,
Romanticism, Verism, the symbolist movement and its legacy, the
avant-guards, war and literature, Fascism and literature, and
contemporary literature. Students will write three short essays during
the term, participate in an oral presentation, take five quizzes and a
final exam. The class will be conducted in Italian.
