Topic: Visions of the Metropolis (Fall 2011)
* 2nd 8 weeks course

The growth and development of Berlin and modern American cities such
as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles inspired cinematic visions of
the metropolis. For some filmmakers, the city was a place of visceral
experience that could be conveyed to a mass audience through sound and
image. For others, the city was the site of anxiety and alienation.

Taking Berlin as our point of departure and a continued point of
reference, we will explore shifting aesthetic approaches to cities in
the 20th and early 21st century.

Students will complete two written assignments and a creative project
and will also be responsible for oral presentations and sequence analyses.
