This course introduces students to the history of Africa from
earliest times to the early nineteenth century. The entire continent
is covered, from Egypt to South Africa, and from Senegal to
Zanzibar. General themes are presented and specific case studies
explored. The era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is examined from
an African perspective. The aim is to provide students with a firm
grasp of Africa’s historical development and its contributions to
world history.

Course evaluations consist of three exams, equally weighted, and a
final.

The course carries Cultural Studies credit. No prerequisites.
