Jews in Modern Europe: This course seeks to familiarize students
with major historiographical issues relating to the history of
European Jewry in the modern era. Specific topics to be addressed
will include the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah), the development of
new Jewish religious movements, Jewish intellectual thought,
emancipation, anti-semitism, Jewish migration and demographic
trends, Jewish culture, and daily life.
The course will acquaint students with key works of historical
scholarship on the topic and introduce students to selected primary
source material and reference works. Assignments will include
regular response papers and the writing of a mock grant proposal.
