History | The Anglo Saxon World
H710 | 32242 | Deliyannis

In this course, we will examine the history and culture of Anglo-
Saxon England and its neighbors from 400 to 1100. We will consider
scholarly attitudes toward a variety of issues such as the advent of
the Anglo-Saxons, paganism and Christianity, social and political
development, contacts with other islands and the continent, Bede and
his impact on our vision of history, the impact of the Viking
invasions, the gradual unification of the island, and finally the
the Norman conquest of 1066. Students will write a book review of
one monograph and present it in class, and will write either a
bibliographic essay or a research paper (depending on whether the
class is being taken as a colloquium or a seminar) on a subject of
the student's choice.
