1963-1974 Assassination to Impeachment: American Culture in an Age
of Tumult

John F. Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963. Robert Kennedy and
Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated in 1968. Richard Nixon
left office on August 9, 1974. Much happened in America that
strained and stretched American politics and culture during this
period: the civil rights movement, the counterculture, the women’s
movement, and the Vietnam War and the antiwar movement. We will
survey these significant events, mainly through works of nonfiction,
journalism, fiction, poetry, music, and film. Various short writing
exercises, a cultural biography of a year, short paper, long paper,
final. Since this is an honors seminar, class participation will be
expected and valued.

Films on Thursday evenings.
