Social Work | Introduction to Social Work

This course is an introduction to the profession of social work and
the philosophical, societal, and organizational contexts within which
professional social work activities are carried out.  This course
provides the opportunity for students to explore their interest in and
potential for a career in social work by introducing the knowledge,
skills and values of social work and exploring the role of social
workers within a variety of social services.  Cognitive and
interaction skills necessary for competent practice are introduced in
this course.  By emphasizing the value base of social work practice
and its commitment to social and economic justice, this course assists
students in assessing the congruence between their own values and
those of the profession. Students will complete 15 hours of community
service as a course requirement.
