The average American child spends roughly six hours a day with some
form of mass media. This seminar will focus on  social scientific
research to explore the role of the mass media in children’s
socialization.  The emphasis will be on how children’s cognitive
development, emotional development, and social development interact
with media habits and influence. Major theoretical perspectives will
be covered along with the research findings in these areas. The
course will also explore the public policy implications of this
