The course studies Turkish culture and society by means of literature in translation, short stories, poems, plays and novels of contemporary authors. Folktales, proverbs, riddles and folk drama of peasants will be examined as purveyors of cultural, social and historical characteristics of Turkish society. The course offers a good opportunity for the undergraduate student to become better acquainted with the contemporary Middle East.

Exams: Final examination, consisting of a combination of multiple-choice, true-or-false and essay questions.

Required Texts: The course features especially prepared audio-visual materials. No single textbook for the undergraduate is available. Selected readings will be assigned and duplicated copies of unpublished translated material will be distributed.

Other Information: One or two weeks prior to the final examination will be devoted to review and discussion. One week will be designated as a reading period.

Days and Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15-12:30.
