About the Instructor


This course will cover Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Eastern Tibet from the early 17th century to 1949. Focusing on social and political changes, topics treated will include 1) how China's Manchu dynasty conquered and controlled these regions 2) how Manchu ruled changed the local social and political structure 3) how the changes in China from 1900 on revolutionized the nature of Chinese rule and 4) how the Chinese Communist party established its rule over these regions and the initial effects of that rule.

Requirements for undergraduate: Mid-term, final and interpretive essay.

Requirements for graduates: Research paper.

Days and Time: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:25-2:15.
