The Baltic States since 1918
This course offers an intensive study of the Baltic states in the 20th century. We will begin with
background on the origins of independence in the wake of the Russian Revolution and then focus
on three key eras: the interwar independence period, Soviet rule, and the re-establishment of
independence and its aftermath, 1987-1997. In addition to political developments, socioeconomic
change and cultural life will also receive considerable attention. Weekly meetings will be centered
on discussion of common readings.
Written Assignments: Written assignments will include a bibliographical essay and a research
paper (15-20 pp.).
Days and Time: Tuesday, 2:30-5:00.
