Advanced Turkish I

The aim of this course is to teach students the basic communicative skills, that is reading, writing, and listening at advanced level. Students will practice dialogues, everyday problem solving situations, role model exercises in class. This class aims a communicative approach for learning. However, students will be familiarize with the contemporary literary works such as short stories and poems, newspaper articles on the current issues in Turkey.

Assignments: Students are expected to do the weekly assignments. Additionally, they are asked to keep a journal to be exchanged with the instructor. This journal is important, because it is an interactive exercise. Students should write on a tangible topic, so that we can exchange some conversation on paper. You are allowed to bring 3 late assignments, if there are no later than one class. You will lose 2% of your grade for additional missing assignments.

Attendance and Participation: Students are allowed up to 3 absences which can be used for any illnesses, emergencies or any private business. Two percentage points from the total grade will be subtracted for each additional absences. If students miss a quiz or exam, they will not have a chance to take it again, unless it is due to a health problem.

Conversation Hours: As it became a traditional gathering for the Turkish students and learners of Turkish, we will keep the weekly Turkish Conversation Hours. Starting on the January 21, 1997, Turkish Table will take place bi-weekly at Runcible Spoon Cafe between 4-6 p.m. Students should plan to come at least 3 conversation hours in order to accumulate the necessary percentage for their semester grades.

Grading: Your final grades will be given on the A, B etc... scale and they will be weighed in the following fashion:

Attendance 10%
Assignments 40%
Oral Exam 10%
Final Exam 40%
