About the Instructor

For centuries Ottoman Turkish was the main literary language of the Ottoman Empire. Written in a modified Arabic script, it was used by writers, scholars and administrative officials alike until the final collapse of that Empire in l922. The course is designed both as an introduction to the syntactic and semantic structure of this language and as an introduction to Ottoman culture by reading, translating and discussing selected classical passages.

Students will be expected to attend and prepare for every class period, since grades will be based upon class performances.
