Shamanism in Central Eurasia
A description of the phenomenon of Shamanism among the Turkic, Mongolian, and Tungus
peoples. The emphasis in the presentation of material is on placing religious practices and beliefs
known as "shamanistic" in their broader religious frameworks. An attempt is made to define
Shamanism within these cultures and to describe the religious structures of these peoples in
historical and cultural contexts. The central problem addressed in this course is, "Is Shamanism a
religion, a religious phenomenon, or what?"
Requirements for undergraduates: One short research paper, plus a mid-tem and final exam.
Requirements for graduates: Two short research papers, plus a mid-term and final exam.
Days and Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 1:00-2:15.
