About the Instructor

In Advanced Ottoman Turkish students are expected to acquire skill in recognizing the Persian and Arabic grammatical components in Ottoman texts, learning the extent of their utilization in Ottoman literary prose, and understanding their functional loads. Since Ottoman Turkish is no longer used in Turkey (and its use was always limited to the educated elite in the Ottoman Empire) students are not encouraged to compose or speak in class, but rather to comprehend literary prose texts and express their meaning in English.

Students are expected to attend and prepare for every class period, since grades will be based on class performance.

XIX. Ortasina kadar Yazmalardan Secilmis Metinler, Istanbul, 1965.
