COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION
OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY. DECLARED MINORS OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM
BH402.
This intensive writing course is designed to provide
opportunities for class members to use writing as a way to make
sense of (rather than simply report on some prepackaged
understanding of) several provocative and challenging
contemporary works. We will consider some of the cultural
conditions that help to shape (limit and enable) interpretations,
and we will explore a range of interpretive strategies in order
to test what they allow us to see and say about a work (and what
they may close off). This is a course that requires active
participation (and an open mind). Course requirements: in-class
writing, 3 workshopped papers (including a research project), 3
shorter response papers, readers' theatre presentation,
participation. Readings: Gabriel Garcia M=A0rquez, OF LOVE AND
OTHER DEMONS; John Edgar Wideman, PHILADELPHIA FIRE; Sandra
Cisneros, THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET; Adrienne Rich, YOUR NATIVE
LAND, YOUR LIFE and selections from BLOOD, BREAD AND POETRY; Jose
Rivera, THE PROMISE or Suzan-Lori Parks, THE AMERICAN PLAY AND
OTHER WORKS; Hacker, A WRITER'S REFERENCE; Supplementary Reading
Packet.
