Our course will concentrate on uses and representations of the five senses in fiction, with special
emphases on taste, eating, and the social uses of food and dining. Our readings include Diane
Ackerman's A NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SENSES, a book that might be called a mixture
ethnography, social history, biology, and personal exploration of the senses. Works of fiction
will include Laura Esquivel's LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE, James Joyce's THE DEAD,
Isak Dinesen's BABETTE'S FEAST, E. Annie Prolux's THE SHIPPING NEWS. Student work
in the course will consist of four or five essays in the c. 6 page range and regular short
(paragraph-to-page length) working papers. Regular attendance and class participation will be
required.
