This course will introduce students to reading poetry,
emphasizing the brief lyric.  We will pay particular attention to
the formal elements of poetic expression, and to developing
skills of explication and appreciation. Students will be required
to explicate at least one poem successfully; to read poetry aloud
with fluency; to recite at least one poem by heart; to become
familiar with a basic critical vocabulary; to learn the
principles of scansion.=20
