The first six weeks of this course will emphasize Chaucer (the
General Prologue and a half dozen CANTERBURY TALES in Middle
English) and SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT (in translation).=20
Its organizing question will be, "What do women want? Chaucer,
male bafflement, and female desire." The theme of the second six
weeks will be "In search of Richard," concentrating on
Shakespeare's RICHARD III together with its chronicle sources,
several related medieval and early modern plays, and recent
production videos. Between Thanksgiving and the end of the
semester, the class will divide into several smaller groups, each
to pursue a more specialized reading project in Chaucer,
Shakespeare, or a related writer. Regular attendance and
participation are expected; frequent short papers will be
assigned.
