This course will survey the narrative, lyric and dramatic poetry
of Anglo-Saxon England (the BEOWULF epic and some shorter
pieces), the Middle English period (Chaucer, the GAWAIN-poet, and
others), and the Renaissance (Spenser, Shakespeare, the
sonneteers). Most classes will be devoted to reading and
interpreting individual works; however, some attempt will be made
to provide contrasts between the periods at the same time as we
follow the traditions and ideas that survived from period to
period. A number of classes will concern themselves with how to
read and write about traditional poetry and narrative.=20
There will be two exams during the semester and a comprehensive
final. There will be a mixture of short and long essays and
various kinds of exercises. The required text is the NORTON
ANTHOLOGY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, Vol. I (6th ed.).
