This course will be a survey of English literature from the
Anglo-Saxon period to 1600. We will read English works such as
BEOWULF, Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES and Shakespeare's ANTONY AND
CLEOPATRA; we will also take a look at influential non-English
texts, such as Virgil's AENEID, in exploring the classical and
continental roots of the English tradition. There will be 2
exams, a comprehensive final, and two short papers required. The
primary textbook will be THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF ENGLISH
LITERATURE, vol. 1, 6th edition, with a few additional texts in
paperback.
