The purpose of this course is to provide a survey of the major
authors, the important texts, and the cultural contexts of
English literature from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.=20
To that end, students will learn and practice strategies for
reading and writing about literature that represents a variety of
genres, conventions, and techniques as they strive toward
developing a greater understanding and appreciation of works by
Donne, Herbert, Jonson, Milton, Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Johnson,
among others. Because much of the work of this course will be
carried on through class discussion and other class activities,
regular attendance and participation will be required. Also
required will be a series of brief papers or microthemes, a
midterm, and a comprehensive final exam.
