OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY. DECLARED MINORS OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM

Although we will use the standard NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF ENGLISH
LITERATURE (volume 2) to cover a wide range of poets, essayists,
dramatists, and fiction writers in this survey, we will cluster
them around major authors and major issues so as to chart
evolving conversations (about nature and industrialization,
gender and class, war and imperialism). The syllabus will divide
the years between 1800 to the present into four fairly
conventional periods: Romanticism, the Victorian era, Modernism,
and Contemporary times. However, we will be just as interested
in questioning these categories as in using them.

Class time will probably be evenly divided between lecture and
discussion. Two papers and two exams constitute the requirements
for the semester.
