This class is designed to help students write their own poems and
stories, while considering selections from the great literature
of the past, as well as by contemporary writers. Our texts will
consist of two anthologies, THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY
(Shorter Edition) and SHORT FICTION: CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY,
supplemented by class handouts.=20
Students will be expected to attend three classes per week (one
lecture and two discussion sections), to do all assigned reading,
to take a midterm and a final on the reading and the lecture
material, and to hand in weekly writing assignments. At the end
of the semester, students will hand in a portfolio of four
revised poems and one revised story (ten pages long).
