The course deals with selected artists and art movements from the period 1900 to 1924.
Topics include Fauvism, Cubism, Italian Futurism, German Expressionism, and the Russian
avant-garde. Readings will consist of recent articles and/or excerpts from books dealing with
theories of
the modernism and the avant-garde, relationships between art and popular culture, artists
responses to technology and industrialization, and the problem of twentieth-century "primitivism."
There will be one research paper, a mid-term exam, and a final exam. Graduate students
may substitute a series of book reviews for one of the exams.
