Topic: Antiquity through Classical/Early Christian
This course will study the major written texts connected with the history of Classical and Early
Christian art. These texts, in their different ways, established artistic directions and norms which
artists in subsequent centuries adopted, modified and contested. They are therefore basic to our
understanding of the art of the periods in question and of western art in general. Throughout the
course, the reading of texts will be accompanied by major works of ancient and early Christian art
in order to illustrate the varied relationships between the writings on art and the art itself.
