This course covers the history of printmaking from the earliest woodcuts and engravings
c. 1400 through the revival of wood engraving and the invention of lithography around 1800.
Study of history of printmaking processes and the function of prints, the development of graphic
conventions, and the styles of individual masters such as Durer, Goltzius, Rembrandt, Goya, etc.
The course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. (Students will be expected to
give a brief class presentation on a topic of their choice related to printmaking, and there will also
be reading assignments, a mid-semester and final examination. If possible, prints from the IU Art
Museum will be available for study on a weekly basis.
