Fine Arts | Early Medieval Painting
A522 | 1978 | Kleinbauer
This graduate lecture course will examine illuminated manuscripts made in western
Europe from late antiquity to the end of the Ottonian period (ca. 1056). The course will focus on
the relationship between text and image, examining in detail the degree to which the illuminations
correspond to or depart from the text of the manuscript in which they occur.
For each class meeting the graduate students will read assigned articles or sections of
monographs, all in English, and will be prepared to discuss pertinent issues raised by these
readings. There will be a required reading for the first class meeting. Students must contact the
instructor before that meeting.
There will be two papers and a final examination. Some of the readings for the papers will
be in German or French or Italian, depending on the student's foreign language proficiency.
