Fine Arts | Burke Seminar in the History of Art
A690 | 1987 | Pal

Topic: The Art of India.
An enquiry into the changing iconography of the Indian gods in art and how far such changes
reflect evolving societal needs and norms. The course will interweave the past with the present
and will be structured around the material on view in the concurrent Poster and Calendar art
exhibition in the University Art Museum.
The principal focus of the four lectures will be Hinduism which is the dominant religion in
India today. However, the other faiths that have originated in India, Jainism, Buddhism and
Sikhism--will also be included, and reference will be made to both Islam and Christianity, the two
foreign religions introduced to the subcontinent.
The aim of the four presentations will be to familiarize the student with the essence of both
Indian art and religion and to demonstrate how strongly interdependent they are. Emphasis will
also be given to the use of art as a "text" to interpret theological ideas.
