CEUS Home Page

This course is an introduction to the basic elements of Mongolian pronunciation, grammar, elementary conversation, reading and writing. The language we will be studying is Cyrillic-script Mongolian, as used in the State of Mongolia. By the end of the semester, students should have mastered the main methods of linking sentences through converbs, when clauses, relative clauses and so on. We will also have begun using the causative voice. Active vocabulary at the conclusion of the course will be about 480 words.

Required Texts: Our main textbook will be a handout available in the office of the Central Eurasian Studies Department. Tapes are also available in the Language Lab and may be copied free for home use. English language explanations of the grammar points can be found in John G. Hangin, Basic Course in Mongolian, Uralic and Altaic Series vol. 73 (reprinted, 1992). Tapes to go with this book are in the language lab. The appendices list most endings alphabetically and are useful for reference.
