Buddhism in Central Eurasia
Traces Buddhism from India into kingdoms and areas from northwestern India to the border of
China. Covers, inter alia, Turks, Iranians and other Indo-Europeans. Emphasis is on the
exchange, accommodation and influence of beliefs and practices in this area among Buddhism and
the traditions it encountered there.
Exams: There will be three examinations, covering the main areas presented: The Indo-Iranian
interface through the Mauryan Dynasty; the Kushan period and some later developments;
Buddhism in Chinese Turkestan through the Uyghur kingdoms.
Days and Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15-12:30.
