About the Instructor


The purpose of the course is to provide a general survey of the political and social development of Central Asia from the l6th century to the Russian conquest. Central Asia is defined as the western part of Inner Asia. It stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to Eastern Turkestan (Sinkiang) in the east, and belongs culturally to the Islamic world.

The main topics to be discussed are: (1) the development of social and political institutions; (2) the role of nomads in the history of Central Asia and the process of their gradual integration into the sedentary culture; (3) the formation of various ethnic groups constituting the modern population of Central Asia, and especially the inter-relationship between the Iranian and Turkic ethnic groups; and (4) the question of cultural and political decline of Central Asia since the 16th century.

Exams: Midterm and final examinations.

Papers: Graduate students are expected to write a paper.

Required Readings: No single textbook will be used. Since existing literature on the subject in English is insufficient, the students will have to rely mainly on the material given in the lectures, but selected readings will be assigned (most of it provided in a reader that can be purchased from the Department office).
