About the Instructor

This course deals with the historical development and present situation of the approximately 80 languages spoken in the huge territory between Poland and the East Asian Pacific rim. Sociolinguistic (macrosociolinguistic) aspects will be emphasized. Key concepts include nation and language, language and state, majority and minority languages, historical and

emerging languages, linguistic conflict-research, internal and external linguistics, English as a common second language, and economic life and language. Special attention will be paid to contacts with the European Union and the US.
