About the Instructor

This course deals with the archeological history of the Inner Asian region of Central Eurasia, that is, the areas of Mongolia, South Siberia, Tuva, and Szungaria. The focus of the course is on the archeological materials made available for the most part in the past 40 years, but also surveys earlier discoveries, as well. The bulk of the lectures are devoted to looking at the way in which the history of the region requires re-interpretation, on the basis of a wealth of information shown in petroglyphs, megaliths, burial rituals, burial materials, runes, and horse equipage.

Work in the class will include readings in translation from Russian and Mongol, interpretation of eras of history on the basis of archeological data, and application of various theories to the materials. In addition to the reader for the class, many other texts, maps, and pictures will be made available. There is no set reading for any given week, as the classroom analysis of eras will determine the pace of the course.
