About the Instructor


This course will introduce students to the oldest recorded Tibeto-Burman languages, all of which date to the Middle Ages. It will briefly cover the basic features of each language (phonology, morphology, syntax), introduce students to the script and lexicographic tools, and survey the sources and text publications, previous research, paleographic problems, and comparative-historical research. Languages covered will include Tangut, Pyu, Old Burmese, Meithei, and Newar. Attention will also be give to 'Nam' (a long text in an undeciphered Tibeto-Burman language from the 9th century A.D.) And Zhangzhungskad.

Prerequisites: U582 Old Tibetan; Ph.D student status.
