About the Instructor

This course deals with recent events in Mongolia that have produced a breakdown in the old, socialist systems, and a movement towards a democratic government. There are four different, but intersecting aims in this course;

1. To analyze the various political, economic, and social structures that were developed in Mongolia between 1945 and 1990, in order to understand the forces at work in the society.

2. To determine the flaws in those systems, and to seek the reasons for the long period of stasis that hobbled Mongolia from 1975 until 1990.

3. To examine the modernization movement that began in 1985, with emphasis on the external forces that came to bear on Mongolia.

4. To attempt to determine how change is likely to occur in the immediate future, as well as over the long-term.
