This course is the first in a four-semester sequence that meets the
University's foreign language requirement.
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the language and
culture of an American Indian people, the Lakota (Western Sioux) of North
and South Dakota. Study is designed around an introductory Lakota
language textbook, weekly lessons, tape recordings, and readings on Lakota
culture. The course requires both oral and written exercises (in and
outside the classroom), and will teach both speaking and reading.
