Anthropology | American Indian Languages
L320 | 0487 | Le Sourd

This course provides an introduction to the languages and language families
of Native North America. We will begin by considering how languages can be
classified into families on the basis of the comparative method of
historical linguistics, reviewing and critiquing some of the many
classifications of Native American languages that have been proposed and
identifying issues of continuing relevance to work in this area. The
remainder of the course will be devoted to a series of case studies of
individual languages and their cultural contexts. The cases studies will
be chosen to illustrate the structural diversity of the languages of Native
America.
