Topic: Foundations and Early History of Rome

The course explores the foundation and early history of Rome
through myth, literature, and archaeology. We begin with
the Aeneid of Vergil and proceed through the Ab urde condita
of Livy, turning constantly to the archaeological remains
for confirmation and questioning of the literary and
historical sources. We will focus on the early development
of the city of Rome, especially the Forum, Forum Boarium,
and Palatine. Given the nature of the publications, there
will be considerable reading in the libraries as well as in
the class texts, Vergil and Livy.
