This seminar will focus on major twentieth-century writers and how they
have approached literary translation and translators. Topics to be
covered will include authors as self-translators (Beckett, Nabokov,
Kundera), authors as translators (Rilke, Proust, Coetzee), and authors and
their translators (Mann, Joyce, Eco, Borges). Both prose and poetry will
be considered. Students may work with English and any other relevant
language. Each student will write a research paper of approximately
twenty pages.
