COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION. OPEN TO HONORS DIVISION STUDENTS ONLY.
OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM HONORS DIVISION, 324 N. JORDAN.

In L202 we read, discuss, and write about a variety of works of poetry,
prose fiction, and drama. Although we discuss various critical approaches
to literary interpretation, our focus is on your own response to the work
under consideration. Possible texts: R. V. Cassill, ed., THE NORTON
ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT FICTION, Fourth edition (shorter version), X. J.
Kennedy, Ed., AN INTRODUCTION TO POETRY, Shakespeare's KING LEAR and
OTHELLO, Harold Pinter's BETRAYAL, Jane Smiley's A THOUSAND ACRES, Joseph
Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS. Reading assignments: This course emphasizes
intensive reading as well as intensive writing, but reading assignments
will not be lengthy. There will be six short (3-5 pages) papers, due at
approximately two-week intervals. There may also be some in-class writing
assignments. There is no final exam. This is a discussion course, and the
final grade will be determined by contribution to the class discussion as
well as by written work.
