As we survey a variety of important eighteenth-century British novels, we
shall consider a series of issues as pertinent to eighteenth-century
society as they are to our own. We shall consider how novels reflect and
negotiate what it means to be a man or a woman and what their "proper"
relationship should be. We'll study the ways novels depict the rise of a
consumer society
The novels we'll read will likely include Daniel Defoe, ROXANA; Samuel
Richardson, PAMELA; Henry Fielding, TOM JONES; Charlotte Lennox, THE
FEMALE QUIXOTE, Tobias Smollett, RODERICK RANDOM; Maria Edgeworth, CASTLE
RACKRENT; Ann Radcliffe, THE ITALIAN. As we explore a broad set of issues
your participation in discussion of them will be critical. There will also
be occasional quizzes, a mid-term and final and two 6-7- page papers.
