Topic: "REPRESENTATIONS OF AIDS: PORTRAYING THE EPIDEMIC IN AMERICA"

In this course we will pay close attention to the words, images, narratives,
discourses, symbols, and other social markers that have been used to
represent the AIDS epidemic in America. Once we identify some of the
particular ways AIDS has entered the American consciousness, our inquiry
will be concerned with understanding the cultural viewpoints motivating
those representations. In what ways has AIDS become a social, rather than a
strictly viral, epidemic?
