SECTION HAS BEEN DESIGNATED FOR EDUCATION MAJORS.

SPECIAL TOPIC: LITERACY, CULTURE, AND CRITICAL PEDAGOGY

This section of W350 has been designated for Education majors and for
those seeking secondary certification. This course is designed as an
introduction to literacy studies, critical pedagogy, and the teaching of
writing. We will explore theoretical, pedagogical and methodological
issues raised by teachers and scholars in literacy and composition
studies. Some of the topics that we will discuss are: multiculturalism
and the politics of difference in our schools, the construction of
discourse communities, critical education theory, and reflective teaching
and practice. We will examine the role that race, gender, socio-economic
class, and ethnicity play in language education and consider how the
values a culture places on particular kinds of literacy (media, print,
legal, occupational literacy, etc.) are culturally and historically
situated.

Course assignments will include weekly reading journals, a group
presentation, four 5-7 page essays, drafted and revised.

The reading list may include chapters from the following books and a
