This course treats the fundamentals of language development from Latin to
contemporary French, with emphasis on the medieval period. Weekly readings
in Old French provide a framework for the study of the phonology, morphology,
syntax, and vocabulary of the developing language. No prior knowledge of
Latin or medieval French is expected. Weekly exercises, final examination,
but no term paper.
