Germanic Languages | Intensive Dutch I
N401 | 2687 | Van der Cruysse-Van Antwerpen

Three credit hour course; meets 11:15 a.m.-12:05 p.m., MTRF in BH 240.

There is no previous knowledge of the language necessary for this course. It
is possible to attend N401 as a first foreign language course. We move fairly
rapidly through elementary grammar and pronunciation, and concentrate on
conversation and reading from the beginning. The grammar book will be
supplemented by dialogues and exercises in class. Audio-tapes and video
materials will be used on a regular basis in order to improve listening
comprehension and pronunciation skills.

Optional extra-curricular helps are: a weekly coffee hour, one film or
traditional Dutch event per month, and guest speakers. The goals to be reached
by the end of the first semester of Dutch are: good pronunciation, elementary
grammar, a reasonable conversational fluency, and an ability to read not-too-
complicated texts.

Grading: weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Because class participation
also covers a solid part of the grade, students are encouraged to bring up
their own topics of interest to be covered in class.
